This past weekend, the Gauchos concluded the fall season with the annual Alumni Game. After a close first half, the current team led the alumni squad 3-2. In the second half, the current Gauchos dominated possessions and went on to win 10-2. It was a typically beautiful day in Santa Barbara, and the game served as a fantastic finale to Alumni Weekend. Other highlights from the weekend included the alumni golf outing and the Gauchos Lacrosse Hall of Fame dinner. This year, Tycho Suter (’04) and Ryan Brittain (’05) were inducted into the hall of fame, and the WCLL Championship team of 1987 celebrated their 30th anniversary. The overall turnout for the weekend was tremendous, and the 1987 team was very well represented.
The previous weekend, the Gauchos hosted the 6th annual Face Off vs Leukemia event on campus. The team scrimmaged division rival Chapman on Saturday night and then played three short scrimmages on Sunday, November 4th. The team gained valuable game experience on the field, and raised close to $2k for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
This fall, the Gauchos used a different approach from previous years in order to build the team. “We put much more emphasis on creating team chemistry and building our team culture this fall,” said head coach Mike Allan. “We didn’t spend as much time installing multiple schemes on offense and defense, and really just kept things simple and let the guys play. We like where we are right now, and the team is very excited for the season.”
The Gauchos will welcome back several players in January who spent the fall quarter studying abroad, as well as some players who missed time with injuries throughout the fall. The season opener will be played at home against Stanford on Saturday, February 3rd.
